What is Brahma Kamal?

The Brahma Kamal is not a lotus but a type of cactus. The flower only blooms at night and has a spell bounding fragrance because it is in a hurry to attract its pollinators at night.

The name Brahma Kamal has its origins in Indian mythology. Brahma, the Indian God of Creation holds a lotus flower in one of his four hands and he also sits in a lotus, the national flower of India. Quite contrary to its appearance, the Brahma Kamal is not a lotus but a type of cactus.

The flower starts blooming after sunset from 7 pm onwards and takes about two hours to full bloom, about 8 inches in diameter and remain open throughout the night.

Brahma Kamal, named after Brahma, the God of Creation, probably blooms only for one night in the entire year, somewhere between July and September.

It is commonly known as Night blooming Cereus, Queen of the night, Lady of the night as its beautiful Lotus like flower blooms late at night. In India, it is called as Brahma Kamal ( ब्रह्मकमल ) and is treated as a sacred plant.

It is also popularly known as Orchid Cactus as the flower has orchid like beauty and plant resembles cactus inhabit.

The Brahma Kamal plant found in Himalayas is often mixed with the plant seen growing on window sill in homes. It is the state flower of Uttarakhand.

In Hindu drawings Brahma is seen sitting on a pink flower that is resembling lotus (Sanskrit:Kamal), which is Indian National flower. Hence people claim that the pink flower of Nelumbo nucifera to be Brahma Kamal

History of Brahma Kamal

It is reckoned that the revival of Lakshmana using Sanjeevani the Gods showered Brahma Kamal from heaven in a celebration which took root in the valley of flowers, the reason of it blooming once a year. Given the status of a life-restoring flower, it has numerous medicinal properties. Tales have it, Brahma emerged from Vishnu’s navel in a lotus flower. Hence the one year blooming.

The shimmering flower came into notice by Draupadi when accompanying, the Pandavas when exiled in the forests, recollecting the grievous memories in the Kaurava court, one evening spectating a lotus bloom, feeling indescribably spiritually contented but withering as quickly as it had blossomed.

The flower chooses to bloom in a house by its own, and a spectacular view witnessed rarely.
