Using Viagra Regularly Can Harm Your Vision

Viagra, a commonly used drug for treating erectile dysfunction in men, has been linked to potential vision-related risks, according to a new study conducted by researchers from the University of British Columbia. The research suggests that regular users of Viagra and other similar impotence medicines may face an increased risk of experiencing sudden vision loss, flashes of light, and dark spots. The study also explored the possible connection between the drug's effect on blood flow and its impact on eye health.

The Vision Risk Connection

The research team examined the effects of impotence medicines, including Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, and Spedra, on vision. The study indicated that individuals regularly consuming these medications were found to have an 85% higher likelihood of developing serious eye conditions, as published in JAMA Ophthalmology. The potential risk stems from the potential disruption of blood supply to the eyes due to increased blood flow to the genital area caused by the drugs.

Study Details

The study analyzed insurance claim records of over 213,000 men who were using erectile dysfunction pills. Among the participants, 123,347 were taking sildenafil (branded as Viagra), 78,609 were using tadalafil (Cialis), 6,604 were on vardenafil (Levitra), and 4,473 were using avanfil (Spedra). The researchers followed these individuals' claim records from 2006 to 2020 to assess the development of eye conditions.

Findings

The study found that regular use of these medications was associated with a 158% increased risk of serious retinal detachment. This condition results from fluid buildup behind the back of the eye, causing the sudden appearance of spots and flashes of light in the field of vision. Additionally, the risk of ischemic optic neuropathy, a condition marked by compromised blood supply to the optic nerve and resulting in central vision loss, was 102% higher among regular users. The risk of retinal vascular occlusion, characterized by blood clot formation in the retina leading to sudden vision loss and dark spots, was 44% greater.

Conclusion

While the risk of experiencing these eye conditions due to erectile dysfunction medication remains relatively low, the study emphasizes the importance of regular users being vigilant about any changes in their vision. Those who notice any unusual visual symptoms are advised to seek medical attention promptly. As millions of prescriptions are dispensed monthly for these medications, the study underscores the potential impact on a significant number of individuals.
