India's 56 lakh km long road network comprises national highways, state highways, rural roads, urban roads and district roads. To distinguish between them, the milestones on the sides are colour coded.

Meaning of Milestone Color on Indian Highway

Traveling time you will see a lot of things on the streets, one of these is the ‘Milestones’ that means ‘Mile Stones’. These stones, along with the name of the place to come forth, are also made of distances and many different types of marks are also made. If you have ever noticed, the color of these ‘milestones’ falling on different paths is also different.

Actually, there is some reason behind doing this. Different colors of ‘milestone’ also mean, if you are still deprived of this interesting information, then we are told that what these stones mean.

1. National Highway: Milestone Yellow and White color

If you see a yellow stone on the way while traveling, then understand that you are on the National Highway (National Highway). These highways connect states and cities.

2. State Highway: Milestone Green and White color

Many times a green ‘Milestone’ appears on the way, this is a sign that you have now come out of the National Highway and have come to the State Highway. State highways connect states and districts together.

3. City/District Road: Milestone Blue/Black and White color

Apart from yellow and green, if you see black colored stones on the way, then understand that you have taken entry in a big city or district.

4. Rural Road: Milestone Red and White color

If you are traveling on the orange color ‘Milestone’ in front of your eyes, then you understand that you have entered a village. These roads are built under the Pradhanmantri Gram Sadak Yojna.
